The “Fix-me” Problem in Pilates
In this Pilates Journal article, two of our Movement Science Made Simple mentors, Cara Reeser and Jeremy Laverdure, have a conversation about the issue of clients coming to their Pilates sessions with the assumption that a) there is something wrong with them, and b) the teacher’s job is to solve that problem. Obviously we want all Pilates instructors to be well-trained in best practice protocols for all kinds of pathologies and issues that frequently appear in our studios, but is “fixing” what we really want? Or do we want ways to move and manage our issues in a sustainable way? This article may shift your thinking from asking the client “How does your body feel today?” to “What do you want to work on today?” The new pain science studies tell us a person’s pain experience is likely to stick around the more we focus in on it, but can subside substantially when the person is given good movement strategies to support their body in its current state.
